September Is the Real New Year (And I'm Here for It)

I’ve always felt like September is the real new year.

Forget January and the pressure of resolutions when you're still in a post-Christmas fog. For me, it's this time of year – when the kids are back at school, the mornings feel a bit crisper, and the world edges back into routine…that feels like the true reset.

And after a summer full of change, chaos, and moving boxes (yes, I moved house and yes, I underestimated how much stuff I’ve somehow accumulated), I’m leaning right into this energy.

Clearing Space, Physically and Mentally

Over the summer, in between house moves, ice cream, and packing tape, I found myself doing something that felt… symbolic.

I cleared out.

Like, really cleared out.

I sold clothes on eBay. Donated things that no longer served me. Recycled piles of paper I’d kept “just in case.” It wasn’t just about the physical space; I was de-cluttering my brain. Making room. Creating space for clarity.

And that’s what I think September is all about. It’s the season for refocus. For cutting out the noise. For looking at what actually deserves your energy and what’s been taking up space in your business or your life for far too long.

September = Strategy

If you run a business, especially in hospitality, September is a key turning point.

The summer chaos is over. The holiday bookings slow down. Teams are (hopefully) back and settled. And whether you’ve had your head in the day-to-day or stepped away for a breather, now is the time to ask:

  • What do I want the rest of the year to look like?

  • What’s working and what’s quietly draining me?

  • Am I making decisions from clarity, or just trying to stay afloat?

These are the kinds of conversations I have with clients all the time. And not just about spreadsheets or P&Ls (though yes, we do plenty of that too), but about where you’re at as a founder.

Because your business is a reflection of your mindset. And if you’re running on fumes, overcommitted, or just not feeling it, that shows up in the numbers.

Personal Growth Is Professional Growth

Something I’ve been leaning into lately is personal growth without guilt.

Over the past year (and especially this summer), I’ve been making small but mighty moves to live more intentionally. It’s everything from moving house to choosing who I spend time with. Saying no more often. Blocking time in my diary for myself, not just for others.

And it’s shown me something:

The more I invest in myself, the stronger I show up in my business.

So, if you’re reading this and you’re feeling like you’ve lost a bit of spark—this is your invitation to get it back...

  • Book that day off

  • Block out 3 hours to plan Q4

  • Take yourself out for coffee (no emails allowed)

  • Or book a mentoring session with someone who gets it 😉

Back to Routine (But Make It Yours)

September is full of “back to school” energy. But instead of rigid routines, I’m looking at intentional structure.

Because structure isn’t restrictive. Structure creates freedom.

That’s what I tell my CFO clients all the time. Systems, processes, clarity; they give you the space to be more creative, more strategic, and more you.

So whether it’s setting up better financial visibility, restructuring your team, or just finally sorting out your inbox, do the thing that gets you moving forward, not just staying busy.

Ready to Reboot?

If you’re nodding along to any of this, feeling like you’re craving more clarity, support, or structure heading into the final stretch of the year, now’s the time to get it.

I’ve opened up a few free consultation calls this month for founders who want to work on their business not just in it. Whether that’s mentoring, finance support, or just a good old-fashioned brain dump to get things out of your head and into a plan…I’m here.

You don’t have to figure it all out alone.

Let’s make Q4 your most focused one yet.
